Austrian Field Peas

The Austrian Field Pea is a cold weather legume that can tolerate severe winter conditions if it is planted early in the fall season. It is used as a ground cover and erosion control aid because it will develop a nodulated, secure root system that can stabilize soil. It will not re-grow after mowing or grazing, so it is not ideal for use as pasture forage. Green manure is another common reason for the planting of Austrian Field Peas. In spring, just as it begins to bloom, it can be reincorporated into the soil to provide a substantial amount of nitrogen for use by the next crop.

*Note: Field Peas should be seeded at a rate of 2 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Or 80 to 100 pounds per acre.
