Turnips
Turnips are most frequently grown for their bulbous taproot which can be consumed by both humans and livestock. But that taproot can also be used to stabilize soils that suffer from erosion problems. Turnips are a cold weather crop that will have the highest rate of root growth during periods of time when the temperatures are cooler. They need to receive adequate moisture levels and can be planted in either spring or fall.
*Note: Turnips should be seeded at a rate of 1/2 to 1 pound per 1,000 square feet. Or 7 to 22 pounds per acre.
