Weak Alkali Grass

Weak Alkali Grass is a cool season perennial grass that often grows in the shallow water of marshes and swamps at low to subalpine elevations. Wet forests, meadows and other terrain depressions throughout the West Coast and many other US states are also environments where Weak Alkali Grass will grow. Knowledge of its value as forage for livestock is limited, but it is known to provide good wildlife habitat. The rhizomes of Weak Alkali Grass are quicker to spread and establish than Tall Mannagrass rhizomes, so it is often used as a soil stabilizer for waterways, ditches and swales. It has also been used as filtration for storm and agricultural water runoff. Weak Alkali Grass is tolerant to high levels of saline, alkaline, and acid and prefers territory that is partially shaded. At certain times during the growing season this grass can be easily mistaken for Rough Stalk Bluegrass.
